MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS FOR LEARNING MEASUREMENT

Welcome to another day!

Today, I would like to explain to you the different materials that teachers can use in order to teach the measurement concept in a more effective and entertaining way. According to this topic, I consider that using some manipulative materials is very rewarding and helpful for learners because they can explore using their hands and brain at the same time. Moreover, it is a perfect way of visualising subjective concepts that are very complicating to understand for young learners even for adults.

GEOPLANO
The geoplano was created by the mathematician Caleb Gattegno in 1960. This mathematician was looking for a method to teach geometry in the most didactic way and he proposed this material in order to introduce the geometric concepts in a manipulative way in which children can understand better these subjective and abstract concepts which most of the time they generate errors ideas. A geoboard is mathematical manipulative used to explore basic concepts in plane geometry such as perimeter, area and the characteristics of triangles and other polygons.

REFILLABLE GEOMETRIC BODIES

Thanks for these manipulative materials, young learners can learn to identify its characteristics and properties as well as they have the possibility of measuring them in order to calculate the volume, side, and total area. Moreover, one of the most positive aspects that have these didactic resources is the possibility of filling them which facilitate a better understanding of the capacity concept and its calculation.

Another important fact to emphasize is the promotion of the students’ motivation since this material will encourage them to explore by themselves, enhancing their curiosity to identify and explain the different geometric figures’ characteristics and properties.

METRE RULER
This resource is an instrument to compare and measure longitude in which children can use to explore their classroom and compare longitude with other objects. Nowadays, the unit of longitude, as we all know, is the metre, otherwise, if we look back at many centuries ago, the way of measuring was totally different in which people used their bodies in order to measure different longitudes.
BALANCE
The balance is an instrument of measuring that was used to know the mass of an object and compare it with others. However, because of this instrument was not designed as a tool of teaching mathematics, it is an unstructured material just like the metre ruler.

As we use the balance in order to measure the mass of different objects and compare between them, teachers can develop practical activities providing young learners opportunities to use it in order to classify, group objects and compare them according to its mass and weight, thus, it is a helpful way of understanding the relation between volume and mass.

ICTs RESOURCES TO TEACH MEAUSEREMENT

Hello everyone! Today, I would like to share you some didactic resources that you can find out on the Internet and use them in order to teach measurement in the classroom. I consider that these types of resources will be motivating and entertaining for learners because they will have fun and at the same time, they will be learning and develop their skills on the new technologies. Moreover, I truly believe that they will understand more effective and meaningful the different concepts that imply the measurement, because it is usually confusing, since they are about subjective concepts in which many students have difficulties to truly understand, so, through providing them these didactic resources, it will be helpful for them. First game called “The LONGITUDE”. In this resource, students will learn the different measurements related to the longitude, it is composed by for main activities. The first one is about measuring using the meter and handspans, in the second one, it...

WHAT IS MEASUREMENT AND HOW DO YOUNG LEARNERS INTERPRETE IT?

In this first entry, I would like to focus on the definition of measurement and analyse how young learners can learn this concept effectively since many students do not usually understand this concept and have many complications when they have to calculate the measurement of something which is beyond their cognitive capacity. The concept of measurement could be defined as the result of measuring, so that, it is the act and effect of measuring. In other words, it is about comparing the quantity of magnitude that we want to measure with the unit of that magnitude. This result will be expressed by a number which will be followed by the corresponding unit, for example, if we want to measure our table and we are going to use the meter as a unit, the result could be 3 meters. Now, I would like to share with you some different activities that young learners can do in order to be aware of the importance of measuring in our social environment. For example, teachers can start with aski...
