FINAL REFLECTION

Hello everyone! As this entry will be my last that I’m going to write for a long time, I would like to share with you my improvement of knowledge about this subject and how it has helped me to realise the importance of teaching measurement in a natural and meaningful way. What I want to mean is that I have learned that teachers should find and use different methods and techniques strategies in order to give children the opportunity to measure by having a curiosity about everything that surrounds them. One of the most important concepts that I have learned and what learners do not develop effectively is the estimation. But, why does this concept is important? There is a simple reason, the development of the ability of estimation is crucial because when children want to express a result allow them to detect some mistakes which the teacher can know how the understanding of the students is. In general, the objective of teaching measure is the discovery of the necessity of...

DIDACTIC APPROACH ABOUT TEACHING STADISTICS.

Hello everyone! Today, I will be focused on the teaching of statistics in Primary Education and the differences strategies that teachers can use in order to help young learners to understand effectively what they are estimating and calculating. Firstly, statistics offers us a world view based on data.  In other words, statistics is the research and data collection. Thanks for using statistics, people can gather, analyse and process information to transform our reality into numbers.  Moreover, it is a helpful tool which could help learners to learn and collect information about such a huge variety of fields which could also help them to acquire a more precise knowledge about everything that surrounds them.    I consider that teachers should encourage and motivate children to investigate the different social problematics that are happening their daily lives which they are not aware of its existence with the purpose of developing reflexive and critic...

ICTs RESOURCES TO TEACH MEAUSEREMENT

Hello everyone! Today, I would like to share you some didactic resources that you can find out on the Internet and use them in order to teach measurement in the classroom. I consider that these types of resources will be motivating and entertaining for learners because they will have fun and at the same time, they will be learning and develop their skills on the new technologies. Moreover, I truly believe that they will understand more effective and meaningful the different concepts that imply the measurement, because it is usually confusing, since they are about subjective concepts in which many students have difficulties to truly understand, so, through providing them these didactic resources, it will be helpful for them. First game called “The LONGITUDE”. In this resource, students will learn the different measurements related to the longitude, it is composed by for main activities. The first one is about measuring using the meter and handspans, in the second one, it...

TEACHING PROBABILITY MEANINGFULLY

The probability plays an important role in our daily life since a wide range of different situations appear spontaneously in which it creates us an uncertainty making the probability a useful tool to evaluate the different circumstances and make the correct choice. Many teachers use different materials to teach probability such as dices, bags of marbles, wheels, etc. In this way, children can practice many times differently and understand better what probability implies.  According to some researches of Fischbein has proved that children have the ability to process the information with probabilistic character in a meaningful way. For this reason, it is important to teach probability in Primary Education in which teachers can provide them a wide range of various activities in which they can learn to distinguish uncertainty, make comparisons between their predictions and what it really happens with the purpose of developing their autonomy and individual ini...

MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS FOR LEARNING MEASUREMENT

Welcome to another day! Today, I would like to explain to you the different materials that teachers can use in order to teach the measurement concept in a more effective and entertaining way. According to this topic, I consider that using some manipulative materials is very rewarding and helpful for learners because they can explore using their hands and brain at the same time. Moreover, it is a perfect way of visualising subjective concepts that are very complicating to understand for young learners even for adults.   GEOPLANO The geoplano was created by the mathematician Caleb Gattegno in 1960. This mathematician was looking for a method to teach geometry in the most didactic way and he proposed this material in order to introduce the geometric concepts in a manipulative way in which children can understand better these subjective and abstract concepts which most of the time they generate errors ideas. A geoboard is mathematical manipulative used to explore basic conce...

LEARNING TO MEASURE IN A DIFFERENT WAY

Welcome again to a new post! In this entry, I will be focused on how teachers can provide young learners opportunities to experiment and understand what measurement is and how they can use different ways of measuring without using the traditional formulas or calculations. The first idea that came into my mind is making learners use their body in order to measure, so, a good way of encouraging them to learn and enhance their interest in mathematics, the development of practical activity could be very interesting and motivating. For this reason, I will explain the activity in order to introduce the longitude to students from the third cycle of Primary Education. First of all, they will work in groups of three or four people, and each one of them will have a purpose, although all the learners will measure the same objects, for example, a table, a pencil, a chair, the blackboard, the door, the window, a book, etc, but with different instruments and using different strategies a...

3 PRACTICAL ACTIVITY ABOUT TEACHING ANGLES

Hello again! In this entry, I will be focused on explaining some activities which can be very motivating and interesting for students in order to learn the angles. I’m going to take Yeap Ban Har as a reference who proposed the Singapur method in which one of the most purposes is the development of students’ abilities to imagine and think about solutions to a certain situation in order to learn the reason why they made those decisions and how they reached to the solution. Moreover, according to this method, students learn more meaningfully if there is something visual and manipulative. For this reason, I’m going to share with you three practical activities to do in your mathematics classroom in order to teach angles in an effective and motivating way; FIRST ONE: USING THE DOOR This activity is very simple and fun which would reinforce the basic understanding of angles. The only thing that the teacher has to do is using colourful adhesive tapes and a post-it in order to m...

LEARNING TRHOUGH PLAYING A GAME

Hello! Today I’m going to talk about a game that teachers can use in order to introduce the measurement topic in the classroom. This game consists of reading and listening to some definitions of measurement and at the end, young learners will have to do a brief quiz to check their knowledge and understanding about the topic.  I consider that this game is a good way of learning the different instruments of measuring people can use in their daily life as well as young learners will have the opportunity to develop their abilities in new technologies, thus, they will acquire more independent and autonomy about their own learning. Another positive fact to highlight is that young learners could practice the foreign language in which it will help them to acquire more vocabulary and will help them to develop writing and reading skills. Well, I’ll let you the web page, if you are interested in using in the mathematics lesson! (CLICK HERE TO START PLAY)

WHAT IS MEASUREMENT AND HOW DO YOUNG LEARNERS INTERPRETE IT?

In this first entry, I would like to focus on the definition of measurement and analyse how young learners can learn this concept effectively since many students do not usually understand this concept and have many complications when they have to calculate the measurement of something which is beyond their cognitive capacity. The concept of measurement could be defined as the result of measuring, so that, it is the act and effect of measuring. In other words, it is about comparing the quantity of magnitude that we want to measure with the unit of that magnitude. This result will be expressed by a number which will be followed by the corresponding unit, for example, if we want to measure our table and we are going to use the meter as a unit, the result could be 3 meters. Now, I would like to share with you some different activities that young learners can do in order to be aware of the importance of measuring in our social environment. For example, teachers can start with aski...

WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

Welcome! My name is Lucrecia Díaz and I am a student from the University of Málaga, specifically, I am studying a Primary Education degree which is my last year. My purpose of this blog is to share with all of you, different methods and didactic activities which could be interesting and useful to implement in a Primary Education classroom. For this reason, the different entries will be focused on how to teach measurement in an innovative and meaningful way. Moreover, I would like to make you aware of the importance of teaching measurement by giving learners the necessary opportunities to experiment and have curiosity by themselves. Therefore, throughout my entries, I will tend to write a lot of ideas and curiosities which teachers can use in the classroom making students be critical and reflective through learning how to measure using different methods and materials. I hope you learn a little more and my entries will be useful for you in order to implement these ideas ...
