ICTs RESOURCES TO TEACH MEAUSEREMENT

Hello everyone!

Today, I would like to share you some didactic resources that you can find out on the Internet and use them in order to teach measurement in the classroom. I consider that these types of resources will be motivating and entertaining for learners because they will have fun and at the same time, they will be learning and develop their skills on the new technologies.

Moreover, I truly believe that they will understand more effective and meaningful the different concepts that imply the measurement, because it is usually confusing, since they are about subjective concepts in which many students have difficulties to truly understand, so, through providing them these didactic resources, it will be helpful for them.

  • First game called “The LONGITUDE”. In this resource, students will learn the different measurements related to the longitude, it is composed by for main activities. The first one is about measuring using the meter and handspans, in the second one, it is about calculating the perimeter of screen dots, the third one is about learning to calculate scales and equivalences; finally, the last activity, it consists on explaining by practical exercises the concept of inch, yard and foot. (If you CLICK here, you’ll see the game).

  • The second game, learners will have different levels to pass, through playing this game, they will learn to recognise the different unit of measurement, longitude and capacity, getting familiar to the meter, kilogram and litre concepts. Moreover, in the most difficult levels, they will learn to solve problems and change the unit of measurement. (If you CLICK here, you’ll see the game).

  • The last game which is called “The volume and capacity”. In this didactic resource, young learners will have the opportunity to practice with volume using the cube as a reference, the unit of capacity, which is the litre, the students will practice some activities which let them to understand how to measure and change some units to others. Moreover, they will learn the cubic meters and how to measure the volume of different figures and prisms. (If you CLICK here, you'll see the game).

MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS FOR LEARNING MEASUREMENT

Welcome to another day! Today, I would like to explain to you the different materials that teachers can use in order to teach the measurement concept in a more effective and entertaining way. According to this topic, I consider that using some manipulative materials is very rewarding and helpful for learners because they can explore using their hands and brain at the same time. Moreover, it is a perfect way of visualising subjective concepts that are very complicating to understand for young learners even for adults.   GEOPLANO The geoplano was created by the mathematician Caleb Gattegno in 1960. This mathematician was looking for a method to teach geometry in the most didactic way and he proposed this material in order to introduce the geometric concepts in a manipulative way in which children can understand better these subjective and abstract concepts which most of the time they generate errors ideas. A geoboard is mathematical manipulative used to explore basic conce...

WHAT IS MEASUREMENT AND HOW DO YOUNG LEARNERS INTERPRETE IT?

In this first entry, I would like to focus on the definition of measurement and analyse how young learners can learn this concept effectively since many students do not usually understand this concept and have many complications when they have to calculate the measurement of something which is beyond their cognitive capacity. The concept of measurement could be defined as the result of measuring, so that, it is the act and effect of measuring. In other words, it is about comparing the quantity of magnitude that we want to measure with the unit of that magnitude. This result will be expressed by a number which will be followed by the corresponding unit, for example, if we want to measure our table and we are going to use the meter as a unit, the result could be 3 meters. Now, I would like to share with you some different activities that young learners can do in order to be aware of the importance of measuring in our social environment. For example, teachers can start with aski...
